Native history predates 1492. Native peoples have been on the North American continent for centuries before colonization began. Learn about U.S. History from the perspective of Native Americans. From the formation of the Iroquois Confederacy to landing on Plymouth Rock and the Lost Colony of Roanoke to the tribes that participated in the American Revolution and the move westward, discover the creation of the treaties between the United States and Native Nations. Finally, learn about the beginning of the end for Native Nations with the Indian Removal Act and the Trail of Tears. This lecture begins in the 1100s and ends just before the Civil War in 1860. Heather Bruegl, inspired by a trip to Wounded Knee, South Dakota, quickly developed a passion for Native American History. Curiosity for her own heritage led her to Wisconsin, where she has researched the history of the Native American tribes of that region. Heather is a graduate of Madonna University of Michigan and holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in U.S. History. She currently travels and lectures on Native American history, including policy and activism. Protagonists always want something, and the struggle to achieve their goal gives the story stakes. But is there enough at stake in your story, and are your characters cooperating with the great plot you’ve laid out for them? In this workshop, Alex Kourvo and Bethany Neal will teach you how to raise the stakes and keep your readers riveted until the very last page. This event is part of the monthly Emerging Writers Workshops, which offer support, learning, and advice for local authors. Each month, two weeks after the workshop, there is a meet-up where the instructors are available to review samples of your work and offer advice and assistance in a casual, supportive atmosphere. Michigan's Southeast Asian community recently marked the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War and the Laotian Civil War. As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding, this exhibition invites an open conversation among refugees, immigrants, and neighbors about what it means to rebuild across generations. Reflecting on journeys shaped by political transformation, the exhibit considers how young people’s voices belong in these ongoing conversations about identity, memory, and belonging. Through the themes of windows, mirrors, and sliding doors, it explores representation in children’s literature, games, and toys: the objects that helped shape how Lao communities saw themselves, who they believed they could become, and what is now being passed to the next generation after their first fifty years in America. Featuring approximately 100 prints, artifacts, photographs, rare books, and magazines spanning more than a century of Lao history, and highlighting modern artworks, the pieces examine how Lao refugees recreated homes, traditions, and institutions lost in diaspora while imagining futures in which they could see themselves.

No Strings is an art exhibition curated by Poverty Solutions at the University of Michigan that illustrates quotes from guaranteed income recipients about what an extra $528 per month in no-strings-attached cash meant to them, as part of the two-year Guaranteed Income to Grow Ann Arbor pilot program. The art was created by U-M students under the direction of artist Katie Hammond. For more information on this project, please visit the exhibition website. The Lobby Gallery Screen is a generous gift made possible by the Ladies Library Association.

This group exhibit features the collected works of the Painting Section of the University of Michigan’s Faculty Women’s Club (FWC) covering a large variety of styles and media. The FWC is a cross campus organization, offering members acquaintance and fellowship. The members of the Painting Section have been “painting” together regularly since 1929, creating award-winning pieces in a wide variety of media, and learning from one another at weekly gatherings in their homes. Sharing experiences with new media, critiquing one another’s work, and encouraging exploration in artistic expression are the basic elements of their continuing study of the visual arts as a group. Shows of their works have been displayed for the past 44 years at venues in the greater Ann Arbor area, including art fairs, art galleries, banks, churches, and libraries. The members of this group strive to enrich the cultural life of the Ann Arbor area by raising awareness of, and by encouraging active participation in, the visual arts.

As we conduct these in person Improv sessions our first priority is keeping everyone safe. Michigan's Southeast Asian community recently marked the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War and the Laotian Civil War. As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding, this exhibition invites an open conversation among refugees, immigrants, and neighbors about what it means to rebuild across generations. Reflecting on journeys shaped by political transformation, the exhibit considers how young people’s voices belong in these ongoing conversations about identity, memory, and belonging. Through the themes of windows, mirrors, and sliding doors, it explores representation in children’s literature, games, and toys: the objects that helped shape how Lao communities saw themselves, who they believed they could become, and what is now being passed to the next generation after their first fifty years in America. Featuring approximately 100 prints, artifacts, photographs, rare books, and magazines spanning more than a century of Lao history, and highlighting modern artworks, the pieces examine how Lao refugees recreated homes, traditions, and institutions lost in diaspora while imagining futures in which they could see themselves.

No Strings is an art exhibition curated by Poverty Solutions at the University of Michigan that illustrates quotes from guaranteed income recipients about what an extra $528 per month in no-strings-attached cash meant to them, as part of the two-year Guaranteed Income to Grow Ann Arbor pilot program. This group exhibit features the collected works of the Painting Section of the University of Michigan’s Faculty Women’s Club (FWC) covering a large variety of styles and media. The FWC is a cross campus organization, offering members acquaintance and fellowship. The members of the Painting Section have been “painting” together regularly since 1929, creating award-winning pieces in a wide variety of media, and learning from one another at weekly gatherings in their homes. Sharing experiences with new media, critiquing one another’s work, and encouraging exploration in artistic expression are the basic elements of their continuing study of the visual arts as a group. Shows of their works have been displayed for the past 44 years at venues in the greater Ann Arbor area, including art fairs, art galleries, banks, churches, and libraries. The members of this group strive to enrich the cultural life of the Ann Arbor area by raising awareness of, and by encouraging active participation in, the visual arts.

Studios, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20); and Sometimes Space, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions, performances, and events, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project, Byrne, Clegg, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. On the Courtyard pillar, Karlsrud scales up photographs of objects found in liminal spaces surrounding campus buildings on Green Road, which the artist has encrusted in road salt. On the entryway pillar, Clegg zooms in on tiny fragments of found material from UMich’s famous “rock” to celebrate nearly seven decades of student art and activism. Both artists uplift aggregate of local human activity to reveal tiny worlds of found form. Sally Clegg: Sentimentary Rock Sentimentary Rock is a composition of paint slag collected from the UMich rock monument at the corner of Washtenaw Avenue and Hill Street. This colorful composite material has been accumulating at the base of the iconic limestone boulder since the mid 1950’s, when students began a tradition of painting it in acts of protest, creativity, and ritual, sometimes multiple times per week. Akin to byproducts of industry such as “Fordite” (collectable chunks of automotive overspray sometimes called ‘Detroit agate’), Sentimentary Rock includes thousands of layers, each dripped from a palimpsestic public proclamation. When processed, sculpted, sealed, assembled, and macro-photographed, the result is this enlarged array of tiny gems, intended to celebrate the indissoluble student voice. Kim Karlsrud: What Amasses What Amasses is an assemblage of everyday found objects collected within the Miller Creek watershed, an urbanized drainage system that encompasses much of the city of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan campus. Selected objects were immersed in a road salt solution, allowing delicate crystalline formations to emerge. Road salt is a common material input into these hydrological networks during the winter months and exists in multiple states of refinement, expression, coherence, and fragmentation. Each object was then arranged, photographed, and enlarged to recontextualize these materials in ways that invite deeper reflections on how infrastructure and human agency blur notions of the natural and the artificial. Artist Statements/Bios Sally Clegg Sally Clegg is an artist and educator from Pelham, Massachusetts. Her studio practice is rooted in sculpture and expanded printmaking, stemming from a fascination with human efforts to make meaning from our relationships to objects. Clegg integrates history, popular culture, literature and philosophy as material for artmaking, leveraging personal anecdote and humor to reveal the complexity, absurdity, and theoretical richness at play in our connections to things and to ourselves. Clegg holds an MFA in Art from The University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design, and a BA in Art & English from Goucher College. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, and her work can be found in permanent collections at Yale University, The New York Public Library, and elsewhere. This program takes place at Matthaei Botanical Gardens (1800 Dixboro Rd) and we will meet in the conservatory in Room 164. Dress for outdoor walking and sitting. Some of the most important guidelines are as follows: Consent-based space, sober space, non-conversational space (while dancing), non-judgmental, and no photo/video during open dance. The dance itself is led by music from all over the globe, and from all genres. You will hear instrumental, electronic, and vocal music as well. Somatic movement and ecstatic dance can be a powerful tool for healing trauma and tension, calming anxiety, or simply processing emotions held within the body. This is a safe space to feel and move freely. The music will intentionally flow and ebb until we find our way back to stillness. The closing circle offers an opportunity to reintroduce ourselves, reflect, and share our experiences and emotions during our dance journey.
